How commission is calculated
Commission is usually a percentage of a sale or transaction amount, paid to a salesperson, agent or platform. Some arrangements also include a fixed fee in addition to the percentage.
This calculator supports a simple percentage-only commission by default, with an optional fixed fee available in the advanced assumptions for arrangements that combine both.
How the calculation works
Commission formula
Percentage Commission = Transaction Amount × Commission Rate
Total Commission = Percentage Commission + Fixed Fee
Net Amount = Transaction Amount − Total Commission
- Transaction amount is the sale or deal amount the commission is calculated from.
- Commission rate is entered as a percentage from 0% to 100%.
The fixed fee defaults to zero for a simple percentage-only commission. Total commission cannot exceed the transaction amount.
Commission calculation example
A transaction amount of 10,000 with a 5% commission rate and no fixed fee:
| Transaction amount | 10000 |
|---|---|
| Commission rate | 5% |
| Transaction amount | 10000 |
|---|---|
| Percentage commission | 500 |
| Fixed commission | 0 |
| Total commission | 500 |
| Net amount | 9500 |
Adding a fixed fee of 100 to the same example raises total commission to 600 and lowers the net amount to 9,400. Amounts are shown without a currency symbol; the currency selector only changes the symbol and number format.
Assumptions and limitations
Assumptions
- Commission rate applies to the whole transaction amount entered; tiered or sliding-scale commission structures are not modeled.
- The fixed fee, when used, is added once per transaction, not per item within it.
Limitations and why results can differ
- This calculator does not model tiered commission rates, minimum guarantees, clawbacks or split commissions between multiple parties.
- It does not deduct tax or other withholding from the commission or net amount.
Frequently asked questions
How is percentage commission calculated?
Percentage commission is the transaction amount multiplied by the commission rate, expressed as a decimal.
What is the fixed commission fee for?
Some commission arrangements add a flat fee on top of the percentage. Leave it at zero for a simple percentage-only commission.
Can total commission exceed the transaction amount?
No. The calculator rejects a combination of rate and fixed fee that would make total commission larger than the transaction amount.
Does this handle tiered commission rates?
No. It applies one flat rate to the whole transaction amount. Calculate each tier separately and add the results for a tiered structure.
Methodology
Transaction amount is validated from 0 to 1,000,000,000,000 and commission rate from 0% to 100%. An optional fixed fee (0 to 1,000,000,000, default 0) is added to the percentage commission to give total commission.
Total commission is checked against the transaction amount; a combination that would make commission exceed the transaction amount is rejected with an explanation. Net amount is the transaction amount minus total commission. The calculation runs in your browser and inputs are not sent to a server.
