This calculator provides an estimate for informational purposes only. Tax laws, rates, deductions and exemptions may change. Actual tax liability may depend on individual circumstances. Verify important calculations against current official guidance or consult a qualified tax professional.
Private by design · Inputs and downloads stay in your browser
This calculator supports FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27 only. FY / tax year 2026–27 requires verification and is unavailable. Standard deduction is applied automatically: up to ₹50,000 old regime / ₹75,000 new regime. Do not include it again. Enter only verified eligible deductions; exclude capital gains, dividends, crypto, agricultural, business and non-resident income.
How to use the Income Tax Calculator
- Confirm the year. Only FY 2025–26 (AY 2026–27) is available.
- Choose your age category. It affects the old-regime slabs.
- Enter annual gross salary or ordinary pension, and any other ordinary slab-rate income.
- Enter your verified HRA exemption, eligible 80C total and other eligible deductions for the old regime, and eligible deductions for the new regime.
- Confirm the supported income scope, then select Calculate to see both regimes side by side.
Old regime and new regime
An individual taxpayer in India can generally be assessed under the old regime, which allows many exemptions and deductions, or the new regime, which has lower slab rates but far fewer deductions. The better one depends on the deductions you can genuinely claim.
This calculator shows both estimates for the same income so you can see the difference. It does not advise which to elect, and election rules are outside its scope.
How the calculation works
How the tax is worked out
1. Taxable income = gross income − exemptions and deductions, rounded to the nearest ₹10
2. Slab tax = tax computed on the regime's slabs for that year
3. Less rebate, with marginal relief where the rules provide it
4. Add surcharge (with marginal relief), then 4% health and education cess
5. Estimated tax = the result rounded to the nearest ₹10
- Standard deduction is applied automatically: up to ₹50,000 in the old regime and ₹75,000 in the new regime, limited to the salary you enter.
- HRA and 80C amounts apply to the old regime only.
The comparison table lists every step for both regimes, together with the effective tax rate and the annual estimate divided by 12.
Income tax calculation example
A resident individual under 60 with ₹15,00,000 salary, no other income, ₹1,50,000 eligible 80C deductions in the old regime and no other deductions, for FY 2025–26 (these are the calculator's starting values):
| Annual gross salary | ₹15,00,000 |
|---|---|
| Eligible 80C total (old regime) | ₹1,50,000 |
| Age category | Below 60 |
| Old-regime estimated tax | ₹2,10,600 |
|---|---|
| New-regime estimated tax | ₹97,500 |
| Difference (old minus new) | ₹1,13,100 |
Amounts include 4% cess. With a ₹12,75,000 salary and no extra deductions, the new-regime taxable income of ₹12,00,000 falls within the rebate limit and the estimate is ₹0. This example does not cover special-rate income.
Assumptions and limitations
Assumptions
- Only FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27 is supported. FY 2026–27 is shown as unavailable until its rules are verified, and the calculator never substitutes an earlier year's rules.
- The taxpayer is a resident individual with ordinary slab-rate income only.
- Deductions you enter are eligible and verified. The calculator does not check eligibility or apply limits other than the automatic standard deduction.
Limitations and why results can differ
- Capital gains, dividends, lottery and crypto income, agricultural-income integration, business income, non-resident treatment, losses, tax credits, interest and penalties are not modelled.
- The result is an estimate before any tax already paid. It is not a return, a TDS instruction or advice on which regime to choose.
- Tax laws change, so confirm the rules for your year with the Income Tax Department or a qualified professional.
Frequently asked questions
Which tax year can I calculate?
Only FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27 is supported. FY 2026–27 requires verification of the enacted rules before it can be enabled.
Should I enter the standard deduction myself?
No. It is applied automatically and capped at the salary you enter, so entering it again would double count it.
Does a zero new-regime estimate cover capital gains?
No. Special-rate income and other excluded income types are outside this model.
Is the lower estimate a recommendation to choose that regime?
No. It depends on the amounts you enter, and it does not decide election rules or what suits you.
Where does the tax get its figures from?
From the FY 2025–26 slabs, rebate, surcharge and cess held in the calculator's rules data. The official sources used are listed further down the page.
Methodology
The rules for each year are held as reviewed data (slabs, standard deduction, rebate, surcharge and cess). Only FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27, last reviewed on 15 September 2026, is enabled. A year without verified rules is unavailable, and the calculator never falls back to another year.
For each regime the engine subtracts the automatic standard deduction and your eligible amounts, rounds taxable income to the nearest ₹10, applies the slabs, then the rebate and marginal relief, then surcharge with marginal relief and 4% cess, and rounds the final estimate to the nearest ₹10. This is FinBizTools' own implementation of those rules, not an official tool, and has not been independently certified. The calculation runs in your browser and inputs are not sent to a server.
