How to use the Revenue Growth Calculator
- Enter the previous period's revenue.
- Enter the current period's revenue.
- Select Calculate to see the change in revenue and the percentage growth rate.
- A decline shows as a negative percentage, not as an error.
Use the currency selector above the inputs to change the symbol. It changes the display only and does not convert amounts.
What does revenue growth measure?
Revenue growth compares two periods and expresses the change as a percentage of the earlier period. It is a common way to track whether a business, product line or channel is expanding or shrinking.
This calculator compares exactly two periods you enter; it does not project future revenue or calculate a compound annual growth rate across more than two data points.
How the calculation works
Revenue growth formula
Revenue Growth (%) = ((Current Revenue − Previous Revenue) ÷ Previous Revenue) × 100
- Previous revenue is the earlier period's total revenue.
- Current revenue is the later period's total revenue.
A negative result means revenue declined and is shown as a negative percentage, not as an error. When previous revenue is zero, percentage growth is undefined and the calculator explains this instead of showing an infinite value, while still showing the absolute change in revenue.
Revenue growth calculation example
Previous revenue of 100,000 and current revenue of 120,000:
| Previous revenue | 100000 |
|---|---|
| Current revenue | 120000 |
| Previous revenue | 100000 |
|---|---|
| Current revenue | 120000 |
| Change in revenue | 20000 |
| Revenue growth | 20% |
The same previous revenue of 100,000 with a current revenue of 80,000 gives a change of −20,000 and a growth rate of −20%, a valid decline rather than an error. Amounts are shown without a currency symbol; the currency selector only changes the symbol and number format.
Assumptions and limitations
Assumptions
- Previous and current revenue are single totals for consistent, comparable periods that you supply.
- The growth rate is a simple two-period comparison, not an annualized or compounded rate.
Limitations and why results can differ
- It compares exactly two periods and does not smooth out seasonal effects or one-off events within either period.
- When previous revenue is zero, a percentage growth rate cannot be calculated; only the absolute change in revenue is meaningful in that case.
Frequently asked questions
What does negative revenue growth mean?
It means revenue declined between the two periods entered. It is shown as a negative percentage, which is a valid result, not an application error.
Why is growth undefined from zero revenue?
Percentage growth divides the change in revenue by the previous revenue. When previous revenue is zero, that division is undefined, so the calculator explains this instead of showing an infinite number.
Does this calculate an annual growth rate?
No. It compares exactly the two periods you enter. Use the CAGR Calculator for an annualized rate across a longer, dated period.
Can I compare any two periods, such as two different months?
Yes, as long as both revenue figures cover comparable periods and the same scope, such as the same product line, store or business unit.
Methodology
Previous and current revenue are each validated as finite numbers from 0 to 1,000,000,000,000. The change in revenue is computed directly as current minus previous, with no intermediate rounding before display rounding.
Percentage growth divides the change by previous revenue and is only calculated when previous revenue is greater than zero; at zero previous revenue the calculator reports that a percentage is not applicable, while still showing the absolute change. The calculation runs in your browser and inputs are not sent to a server.
