How to use this template
Download the file and open it in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or LibreOffice. Review the Instructions worksheet first. Switch to the ‘Monthly Budget’ tab and enter your anticipated and actual earnings in the Income section. Fill in your recurring fixed obligations and variable living expenses. The dashboard at the top of the worksheet automatically calculates your Net Surplus and Savings Rate as you update values. Save a new copy of the workbook for each calendar month to build an annual financial record.
Formulas and methodology
Total Income = SUM(Income rows). Total Living Expenses = Total Fixed Expenses + Total Variable Expenses. Net Monthly Surplus = Total Income − Total Living Expenses. Savings Rate (%) = IF(Total Income = 0, 0, Net Monthly Surplus / Total Income). Unallocated Cash Buffer = Total Income − (Total Living Expenses + Total Savings Allocated). All calculation cells use protected formula conventions to prevent accidental deletion.
