What cart abandonment measures
Cart abandonment rate is the share of carts that were created but did not end in a completed purchase.
It is a funnel measure: it shows where shoppers drop off but not why.
How the calculation works
Cart Abandonment Rate Calculator formula
Abandoned carts = Carts created − Completed purchases
Cart abandonment rate (%) = Abandoned carts ÷ Carts created × 100
- Carts created is the number of carts started.
- Completed purchases is the number that ended in an order.
Completed purchases cannot exceed carts created; the calculator rejects that combination.
Cart Abandonment Rate Calculator example
1,000 carts created and 300 purchases completed:
| Carts created | 1000 |
|---|---|
| Completed purchases | 300 |
| Carts created | 1000 |
|---|---|
| Completed purchases | 300 |
| Abandoned carts | 700 |
| Cart abandonment rate | 70% |
Amounts are shown without a currency symbol because the arithmetic is identical in any currency; the currency selector only changes the symbol and number format.
Assumptions and limitations
Assumptions
- Each cart is counted once for the same period.
- A cart either completes or is abandoned.
Limitations and why results can differ
- Returning shoppers who complete later may be counted as abandoned in the original period.
- It does not separate reasons for abandoning.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good cart abandonment rate?
This varies by industry and device, so this calculator does not judge your figure.
Why is completed above created rejected?
A purchase cannot exist without a cart, so the inputs are treated as an error.
Does it include abandoned checkouts?
It uses whatever definition of a cart you track. Be consistent.
How does this relate to conversion rate?
Both describe the funnel. See the Conversion Rate Calculator for visitors-to-conversion.
Methodology
Inputs are validated as finite numbers within the ranges shown on the calculator, and division by zero is rejected. The result is computed directly from the formula on this page with no intermediate rounding beyond the stated display rounding.
The calculation runs in your browser and inputs are not sent to a server.
