CPM Calculator

Calculate cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM) from your total ad spend and the number of impressions received in the same period.

Private by design · Entries and logos stay in this browser. Nothing is saved automatically.

Changes the currency symbol and number format only. Amounts are not converted.

How to use the CPM Calculator

  1. Enter total ad spend for the period.
  2. Enter the number of impressions for that same period.
  3. Select Calculate to see the cost per 1,000 impressions.

Use the currency selector above the inputs to change the symbol. It changes the display only and does not convert amounts.

What is CPM?

Cost per mille (CPM), or cost per 1,000 impressions, is the average cost to have an ad shown one thousand times, calculated from total spend and total impressions.

CPM is commonly used for awareness-focused campaigns, where the goal is reach rather than an immediate click or conversion.

How the calculation works

CPM formula

CPM = Ad spend ÷ Impressions × 1,000

  • Ad spend is total spend for the period.
  • Impressions is the number of times the ad was shown in that same period.

Use the same date range and campaign or ad set scope for both figures.

CPM calculation example

Ad spend of 5,000 generating 50,000 impressions:

Example inputs
Ad spend 5000
Impressions 50000
Example results
Ad spend 5000
Impressions 50000
Cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM) 100

Amounts are shown without a currency symbol; the currency selector only changes the symbol and number format.

Assumptions and limitations

Assumptions

  • Ad spend and impressions refer to the same period and the same campaign or ad set scope.
  • This is a blended average CPM across all impressions in the period.

Limitations and why results can differ

  • CPM does not measure engagement or outcomes — a low CPM campaign can still perform poorly on clicks or conversions.
  • Impression counting methodology (e.g. viewable versus served impressions) can vary between platforms and affect comparability.

Frequently asked questions

What does the 'M' in CPM stand for?

It comes from the Latin 'mille', meaning one thousand — CPM is the cost per one thousand impressions.

When is CPM used instead of CPC?

CPM is commonly used for awareness or reach campaigns, where the goal is how many people see the ad rather than how many click it.

How is CPM related to CPC?

Both describe ad efficiency but from different angles: CPM is cost per impression, CPC is cost per click. A campaign can have a low CPM and a high CPC, or vice versa, depending on CTR.

Does a lower CPM mean better value?

It means a lower cost to generate impressions, but says nothing about whether those impressions led to clicks or conversions. Consider it alongside CTR and conversion rate.

Methodology

Ad spend (0 to 1,000,000,000,000) and impressions (0.01 to 1,000,000,000,000, so a division by exactly zero is rejected) are validated directly. CPM = spend ÷ impressions × 1,000, computed with no intermediate rounding before display rounding.

The calculation runs in your browser and inputs are not sent to a server.
